Broward County, Florida - Location
Broward County covers 1,320 square miles. Of that area, 114 square miles is water, located in an undeveloped Everglades conservation area. The largest city in Broward County is Fort Lauderdale. The county is located in southeast Florida, and encompasses a portion of the Atlantic shoreline.
History
This Florida county was named for Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, who was the governor of Florida from 1905 to 1909. Broward County was created in 1915. The county was focused on agriculture, and in the 1960s, Broward County became a leader in providing agricultural products and services to the state. In the mid 1970s, the population of the area exploded, and the last major agricultural center, the Waldrep Dairy Farm, closed in 2003.
During the 2000 Presidential Election, Broward County was one of the counties involved in the controversy related to the vote recount.
Broward County Real Estate
The real estate market in Broward County showed some increased momentum at the end of 2006. Median home prices in the county did appreciate over 2005, and remain relatively strong at just over $350,000.
Things to Do in Broward County
There are a number of interesting attractions in Broward County. In Fort Lauderdale especially, you’ll never be bored! For example, the Museum of Science and Discovery is located in Fort Lauderdale. You can spend an entire day at the museum exploring over 200 interactive exhibits.
You’ll also find the International Swimming Hall of Fame. The museum has over 10,000 square feet devoted to Olympic achievements in swimming from over 100 nations. In addition, there is a swimming and diving facility that is used daily, and is the site of many national and international competitions.
