Palm Beach County Florida - Location
Palm Beach County is located on the Atlantic Ocean in southeastern Florida. It is directly north of Broward County. The County covers a total of 2,386 square miles, and approximately 17% of the County is comprised of water. The Atlantic Ocean and Lake Okeechobee make up the majority of the water portion of the county. West Palm Beach is the largest municipality in the County, with Boca Raton in second place.
Palm Beach County History
The first settled community in the County was called Palm Beach, named for the profusion of palm trees and beaches in the area. That name was adopted for the County when it was founded in 1909. The number of residents in Palm Beach County was 1,268,548 as of the 2005 Census estimate.
Palm Beach County was involved in the 2000 Presidential Election recount controversy. George Bush was named President after receiving a majority of votes in the County – by a 537 vote margin.
